TUSCANY Patio and Retaining Wall Hardscaping
A hardscaped backyard in the Tuscany neighbourhood of Northwest Calgary features a patio and retaining wall of Barkman Roman Pavers and Quarry Stone garden walls/steps in a sierra grey colour. The well-worn appeal of Quarry Stone delivers the appearance of a classic wall or structural accent that has been a part of the landscape forever.
Quarry Stone comes in many colours, used in planters, steps and even fire pits. Roman pavers are one of the most popular paving stone styles. The thickness, range of sizes, and colours make it suitable for backyard patios, driveways and walkways. Tumbling the stone gives it a well-worn, weathered appearance that will never go out of style. In Tuscany, we used a random paver pattern with multiple sizes to create a unique look.
PATTERSON HEIGHTS FLAGSTONE PATIO
We built an all-natural stone patio and retaining wall in Patterson Heights, Southwest Calgary. The flagstone used for this large patio is Sunset Gold Quartzite in a laydown thickness from K2 Stone. This stone is current for outdoor natural hardscape since it provides a robust mixture of gold hues and earth tones. In addition, we used polymeric jointing sand to prevent weed growth and erosion, and it gave a visual appeal to the project.
We built the tiered retaining walls out of Autumn Gold Drystack Blocks from K2 Stone. It is a unique golden-brown stone that is square and rectangular. The benefit of using natural stone is that it will not fade or wear over time and, it looks better with age. Any painted product cannot capture the vibrancy of natural stone. Every stone is unique, they can be shaped, trimmed, and chiselled without losing any coloration or effect. They are easy to maintain and can be pressure washed without being damaged.
SPRINGBANK RETAINING WALL, STEPS TO A BACK PATIO
A large back patio and retaining walls provided access from the main level of this house in Springbank. The Barkman Rosetta series in a Copper Canyon colour was used for the Outcropping retaining walls and the Irregular steps. Rosetta products are a dry cast mix. The Rosetta dry cast mix allows for natural-looking face patterns and outlines. Outcropping has a variety of sizes and heights, which gives a more random natural appearance. The big blocks make the wall system great for large-scale applications.
The patio consists of Barkman Roman paving stones in a random pattern in a charcoal colour. Paving stones will last a lifetime, unlike concrete or asphalt that will crack and need resurfacing. They are very durable and will not crack, flake or chip. They can withstand hot and cold temperatures since they never expand or contract. Changing a stone or two is quick and easy if they become damaged or stained.
